There's no need to hire a professional if you want to have clean carpets that smell nice and fresh.

Deep cleaning your carpets is essential for protecting your carpets from damage, as well as for removing bacteria and allergens that collect over time. If you have small children or pets who spend a lot of time on the ground, giving the carpet in your home an aggressive cleaning every now and then is even more important.

Whether it's an area rug or a fully-carpeted room in your apartment that needs a refresh, here are a few tips for deep cleaning your carpet.

Vacuum first

Vacuuming before deep cleaning will pick up any dirt and dust on the carpet. It's important to do this first to ensure that the carpet is as "clean" as possible before you start. Remove all furniture to ensure that you vacuum the entire carpet, and take your time with this step so you're not pushing dirt into your carpet during further stages.

Tackle the stains

If there are any stains on your carpet, try to get them out before cleaning the entire area. Use a spot cleaner like Resolve or Spot Shot. Spray the area and let the product sit for 15 minutes. Then, blot the product with a damp cloth or sponge. You can also make your own spot cleaning solution by mixing 1/4 cup of salt, 1/4 cup of Borax or baking soda, and 1⁄4 cup of vinegar.

Deep clean it

If you want to deep clean on a budget, make your own cleaner by mixing a small amount of detergent or dish soap and water in a spray bottle. Add some vinegar to your solution to help tackle any build up on your carpet. To speed the process up, rent a steam cleaner and use your homemade solution rather than a chemical cleaner.

Sprinkle salt and baking soda over the carpet, and then spray the soapy water lightly on top of it. Let it sit for a few minutes, then begin scrubbing in one direction with a strong brush. Press rags or towels into the carpet to saturate the water, and then spray it lightly again with fresh water. Use towels or rags, and press them into the carpet to collect as much water out of the carpet as you can. Let it dry and enjoy your refreshed carpet!
